Long live Junglee Jawani

There is nothing “BAD” than choosing a movie which is not only a flop, but also v realize that we’ve been self duped in selecting it. It happens with many of us and keeps on happening.

Though I don’t  remember the number of disaster movies I’ve seen (last one being Raavan), but keep on doing the same mistakes every now and then… And it really feels happy (I am not a sadist, but it’s really fun to pull someone’s legs like that) that someone is following ur footsteps. One of my colleagues has been a “forced bachelor” for long weekend and to kill boredom he went to a Telugu movie called “Bhava”. I did see the poster, but did not care much. Well, to my colleagues surprise he was alone in the balcony throughout the movie. It must be quite hurting to know that (I could understand the same as I also went through that phase in life…).

I too had a similar experience once during my college days… Idea was to get refreshed from the regular boredom and to have some fun me and collage pal Ravya went to a movie called “Kaalia” to Prakash theatre in Belgaum.

Well, the biggest foolishness was to purchase a balcony ticket.

I was optimistic that at least some 10-15 seats will fill up by the time movie starts. But it did not take much time to realize that I was wrong. I and my pal Ravi were the only two people sitting in balcony along with few front benches (what we call Gandhi class people).

To our shock, even the guy who was supposed to close the curtain was also not there. I think the theater people were so sure that nobody will come to watch that particular movie in balcony by paying 25 bucks.

There were quite a lot of movies with combination of Mithun chakraborthy with some not so top class B grade heroines at that time!!! I remember reading somewhere he had a record of maximum flops in a row as well and having entered Guinnis book of world records for that awful achievement (Well, Abhishek tried a lot to give a tough competition, but he could not succeed-A real bad luck Jr.B). This movie had action sequences which would even send the Hollywood stunt folks into shock.

Later it became a part of our college life to go and watch Mithunda’s movies to kill the boredom and have maximum entertainment with a group of 10-15 friends. It used to be fun. Sometimes we used to get confused whether we are watching action or comedy movie.

As most of the movies had similar storyline and all of them shot in Ooty. Almost all of the movies TLV Prasad used to be director and being produced by Mithun Dream Factory (I think now he has serious competition from RGV’s Factory. Remember his films like RGV ki AAG, Darling, Naach, Agyaat and many more).

Here is the interesting thing: TLV holds record as one director doing so many numbers of films with one Hero ( Mithun ) without break in short span in LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS.

Though these movies fail to get notice by most, many such movies came later and created their own space and audiences. (If we could recollect in Rockstar, Nargis asks Ranbir to take her to a movie called “Junglee Jawani”) With minimal investment and eye catching posters, B grade movies used to make good business. Off late, there were many articles on the success rates of such movies with producers making decent ROI. There was an article in INDIA TODAY, according to which there were special theaters in metros like Mumbai and these movies always used to run full for most of the times. Even now, I see some posters like that, which means B Grade movies are here to stay…

Well, all we can say is “Long live Junglee Jawani…”

King of Pop…. Adieu

In early 90’s when there was a wave of Bollywood music making waves across India, I was also naturally a fan of Indian film music. The music was more of traditional kind of music with some western beats here and there. That was not an era of Techno music and no one had heard something like “Remix”. Music was dominated by veterans like Lakshmikant-Pyarelal duo, R.D. Burman and more hip hop kind of music was from Bappi Lehri.

King of Pop

King of Pop (August 29, 1958–June 25, 2009)

That’s when few of my senior friends told me about Michael Jackson and his music. I bought my first English album “BAD” for 60 rupees and it took no time for me being carried away with the music. I became instant fan of MJ and went on collecting his albums one by one… Dangerous, Thriller, History… Though compared to Indian film music, the MJ albums were quite expensive at that point of time (Being student, saving bucks from my monthly pocket money and buying a cassette was a real crazy stuff). But the madness towards his albums was more and more with introduction of satellite TV (though it was in 92 when Star TV made mark in India, we only got cable connection during mid 90s) and watching his video albums over MTV and other channels .

MJ in Mumbai

MJs Mumbai concert was one of the big news in India and was carried all over newspaper and TV. Though it was his only performance here, I was hopping just like any other bands he would surely come to Bangalore once in future.

As there were more channels and exposure to internet grew, I started to keep a track of MJs life and controversies that surrounded him. I later started listening to Boyzone, Backstreet Boyz, Madonna, Dr. Alban and so on just like any other college going fella, there were not many MJ releases as well. But MJ remained a special and any news about him used to immediately catch my attention. Off late I had stored many of his albums in my PC and they were a best entertaining stuff for me. I was a great fan of his dance and choreography, especially “The smooth criminal”… His Bad, Smooth Criminal, black or white, they don’t really care about us, remain my favorite songs forever.

As the time passed there were less and less work of MJ, and the last thing we wanted to see was his concert in London in July 09. Early morning on 26th June when I browsed usually, Time of India website splashed stunning news of MJs demise due to cardiac arrest. Just like the entire world, I too shell shocked with this breaking news.  A person who lived his life surrounded by controversies had bid goodbye to world in the same way. His death was also much speculated with different versions coming out about the circumstances lead to his death.

One of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records, including one for “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time.” He has won 13 Grammy Awards. Though his personal life remained a controversial subject, MJ was indeed “King of Pop” and will be remembered so. May his soul rest in peace…

Ghajini conquers

The last week of 2008 saw release of one of the most hyped movie of the year. Me and Ams were eagerly waiting to catch up like many other. Yes, it was Aamir Khan starer, remake of Tamil original Ghajini. A pure action flick with a successful transformation of Aamir from a Teacher in Tare Zamin Par to a anterograde amnesia patient Sanjay. Tracing back, few of Aamir’s last action flicks Baazi and Mela (apart from skinny Twinkle Khanna, no one remembers this movie though) are best forgotten. I thought Baazi was a refreshing movie with cleanly shaven legs of Aamir dancing an item number, but somehow failed to generate that tempo at box office. The failure of Baazi also put breaks on the career of promising young director Ashutosh Gowarikar.

Coming to the commercial success of the movie Ghajini, today morning news report showed that it has crossed 100 crores mark in first week itself. The movie rights were reportedly sold for more than 90 crores. The marketing and promotion of the movie was well planned and executed.

Talking about the movie Ghajini, it has a simple and straight storyline with some high voltage action. Based on the American movie Memento which was directed by Christopher Nolan, adapted from his brother Jonathan Nolan’s short story Memento Mori. (The concepts like writing notes behind instant Polaroid photographs, tattooing facts on body etc. are directly lifted from the movie without crediting the fact.)

The film is a romantic action thriller that explores the life of a once-rich businessman who suffers from anterograde amnesia following a violent encounter. With the aid of Polaroid images and permanent tattoos on his torso, the businessman tries to avenge the murder of his vivacious model girlfriend, Kalpana, who was killed shortly before he was also attacked leading to his diagnosis of amnesia. Performancewise, Asin as Kalpana is refreshing, especially after her irritating role in Dashavtharam and Pradeep Rawat as Ghajani has done justice to the role. Jiah Khan is average with not giving much life to the role as a medical student Sunita.

The movie belongs to Aamir, as young US return CEO Sanjay Singhania of Air voice mobile and later anterograde amnesia patient. Whether its dazzling corporate honcho in Van Huesan shirts or with those lovely 8 pack abs as anterograde amnesia patient ought to revange for Kalpana’s death. The movie’s some part are shot in ITPL Banaglore and his shooting was a best kept secret till it was finished. With relatively two new comers Aamir stars all the way in the movie. Muragodoss debut in bollywood have not been better than this.

Surya and Asin in Ghajini (Tamil)

Comparison between Surya and Aamir would be unfair as they both are winners in their own way. Aamir being a volatile hero shines in Ghajini as action hero giving action a new dimension in Hindi cinema. However Surya is known to be a action hero with serious roles like Ghajini and Khaka Khaka. Both shine in their own way.

Aamir Khan has come a long way since his debut as a chocolate boy in QSQT. A no nonsense actor as he is considered to be, minds only his business and nothing else. With his filmi background and talent combined with professionalism Aamir has knowledge of what to exploit when it comes to film making. Whether it is Munna in Rangeela or Bhuvan in Lagaan or Akaash in Dil Chahta Hai, he completely transforms into a role and does it with perfection. Unlike other bollywood heroes, Aamir has bought that professionalism in Indian cinema and wish he will soon get an Oscar for India…

Gandhi Smiles….

Gandhian techniques based on principles of M.K. Gandhi. These are derived from the inspiration, vision and life work of Gandhi. Gandhism also permeates into the realm of the individual human being, non-political and non-social.

Popular Gandhian techniques include Satyagraha, Ahimsa, swadeshi and fasting….

Speaking about globalization of Gandhism…

Gandhi’s deep commitment and disciplined belief in non-violent civil disobedience as a way to oppose tyranny, oppression and injustice has inspired many subsequent political figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. (and may be Obama in future, who also draws inspirations from King Jr.)  of the United States, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko of South Africa, Lech Wałęsa of Poland and Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar. By and large all have had success and leaders like Suu Kyi have fair amount of influence on the local government in Myanmar.

Films on Gandhi have been instrumental in spreading awareness about Gandhism.

Oscar winning director Richard Attenborough’s dream project presented Gandhi to the world and to India on Silver screen.

Coming back to India…

Many movies have been made on Gandhi in India. But not many have had the appeal for the masses. Recently Lage Raho Munnabhai popularized the concept of Gandhism and introduced Gandhigiri to young Indian Generation. It inspired many to take the way of non violence to fight against the injustice.

Kudos to Rajkumar Hirani and Sanjay Dutt …

The concept of GRAM SWARAAJ has been adopted in unreleased or soon to be released Kannada movie ‘Gandhi Smiles’.  Directed by debutant Krish Joshi and deals with the above issue in a nice dramatized way. Without getting into details of the plot (which even I’m not fully aware of…), I felt the concept and the adaption of the subject is quite interesting.

Interacting with Mr. Krish Joshi was an interesting and memorable experience for me, as I got to know many things about film making. The amount of work and professional approach Mr. Joshi adopted is worth mentioning here. Also in the era when there are more commercial and stereotype movies in Kannada, Krish’s idea of making a different genre movie is appreciable apart from his sincerity for producer’s money.

Let’s wish ‘Gandhi Smiles’ good luck and it makes a mark in Kannada film industry. ….

Cheers

Dinesh

ONE SHOULD LEARN TO HANDLE SUCCESS….

We were watching Fashion last weekend. Overall a good movie I felt, but slightly lengthy. A typical Madhur Bhandarkar stuff… Loads of reality on glam clad fashion world. Cool performance by most of the cast …

FASHION has it all… Glam, Sex, Drugs, Arrogance, Show off, so on and so forth…  MB talks mostly on various technical aspects of fashion industry as well… Like show stopper, Ramp, back stage stuff etc…  And yeah… there is something to learn…

“ONE SHOULD LEARN TO HANDLE SUCCESS…”

… Movie shows fall of a famous model (Kangna) and rise of another upcoming modeling aspirant from a small town (Priyanka)… The way Kangna fails to handle failure, Priyanka fails to handle success… And so, as expected her downfall begins…

I recollect a dialogue from the movie Spiderman… When Ben Parker tells Spiderman (Peter Parker) …

“WITH GREAT POWER, COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY…”

I should put in another way… the moment we have money, our attitude changes… Not everyone, but with most of people I have come across… The way one speaks changes… oh man, I have everything… A cool job, car, flat/house, wife/husbamd and everything that one should have…

MONEY GIVES THAT ULTIMATE SENSE OF POWER…

But I’m afraid its not real one… And in that process, we lose many other important connections of life… Relations…They say everything here in this world is temporary and the real thing is how many people come to attend our funeral…  PEOPLE are important … RELATIONS which last in tough times are important…
